Message from the Principal

As November is upon us now there are a few calendar items approaching that should be noted on your calendar.

On Tuesday, November 7th, there will be a proposal on the ballot for a school sinking fund.  Sinking funds are used to cover specific capital expense items that would normally have to paid out of the general fund.  Examples of capital expense items are: roofs, parking lots, heating and cooling systems, etc.  If the cost of such items is taken out of the general fund, then the funds used for classrooms and teaching become limited.  This is an opportunity to maintain our school facilities without deferring money from students and classrooms.

Thursday, November 30th and Friday, December 1st are final exam days at AHS.  The final exam schedule is as follows:

November 30th    (AI Due 11/20)           December 1st (AI Due 11/21)

Please note that students can leave after their last exam of the day if they have no make up exams to take.  However, buses will only run at the end of each school day.  AM Tech will attend the tech center on November 30th; but not December 1st.  PM Tech Center will not attend the Tech Center either day.

This year, we implemented an Attendance Incentive Program. The incentive  states that a student can only have one countable absence in a class in order to qualify for the incentive.  If a student qualifies they can get an opt out form from their teacher.  The student must complete and submit an “Opt Out” form to notify the teacher that they are choosing to take advantage of the incentive.  By opting out the student has two options.  First, the student can elect to take the final exam knowing that the final exam grade will only count against their overall grade IF that grade improves the overall grade for the course.  IF the final exam grade does not improve the overall grade for the course, the final will not count.  The second option is to not take the final at all.  Students choosing the second option must understand that once all grades are entered and the final is exempt, that will be their final grade.   It is important to note that while a student may qualify for the incentive, the student can only receive the incentive IF the opt out form has been completed and submitted five school days prior to the final exam for that class. Also, the student must complete and submit to the teacher the opt out form for each class they are eligible.  Teachers will not accept late opt out forms!   Opt out due dates are listed above with the final exam dates.  Students are not allowed additional absences (other than the day of the final) once the form is submitted and approved.

In the light of an ever-changing world, each student will be provided with the opportunity to develop the necessary skills to succeed in our global society. Recognizing that education is a continuing process, we commit to this mission.
